Egon Schiele in brief

Egon Schiele was one of the most important artists in the Austrian Expressionism movement. He was known for his graphic style, his use of distorted figures, and his bold rejection of traditional ideas of beauty. His portraits and self-portraits are some of the most interesting of the 20th century. They are piercing looks into the minds and bodies of the people they show. The artist was incredibly productive during his short career. He is known not only for his psychologically and sexually charged works, but also for his interesting life story, which includes scandal, fame, and a tragically early death at age 28 from influenza, just three days after the death of his pregnant wife and just as he was about to achieve the commercial success that had eluded him for much of his career.

The art of Egon Schiele

Schiele's self-portraits and portraits of other people helped bring back the energy of both types of art with their emotional and sexual directness and use of distorted figures instead of traditional ideas of beauty. Schiele's portraits often show him or people close to him without clothes, posed in revealing or disturbing ways (often from above), and without the usual extra details that are often shown in portraits. Schiele sometimes used traditional motifs, which gave his very personal paintings a more universal, allegorical message about the human situation.

During his short career, Schiele made about 3,000 drawings, which makes him both a very productive artist and the best one who ever lived. He thought of drawing as his main form of art and liked how it let him show himself right away. He made some of the best drawings of the 20th century. Even his paintings showed a style that had some of the most important qualities of drawing, like a focus on contour, graphic mark, and symmetry.

Gustav Klimt, a painter and Schiele's friend and teacher, had the most impact on Schiele's growth. Schiele took after Klimt's focus on erotic images of the female form, and he shared Klimt's insatiable sexual appetite. However, Schiele's emotionally intense, often unsettling Expressionist style, with its focus on his sitters' inner lives and emotional states, was often at odds with Klimt's Art Nouveau–inspired style, which favored a brighter color palette and patterned, glimmering surfaces.
