Jean-Michel Basquiat's works of art

Basquiat's work was a mix of many different styles and ways of making art. His drawings often had words and text, his graffiti was expressive and often abstract, and his logos and icons had a deep historical meaning. Even though his work looks "unstudied," he brought together a lot of different customs, practices, and styles very skillfully and on purpose to make his signature visual collage.

Many of his works show how rich and poor, black and white, and inner and outer experience are opposites or create tension. This tension and difference came from the fact that he was from different cultures and grew up and lived in New York City and America in general.

Basquiat's work is an example of how American artists in the 1980s started to bring the human figure back into their work and give it more importance after Minimalism and Conceptualism had dominated the international art market. People thought that Basquiat and other Neo-Expressionist artists were starting a conversation with Abstract Expressionism from the 1950s and Expressionism from the turn of the century.

Basquiat's work is a good example of how the art world started to notice punk, graffiti, and other counter-cultural movements in the early 1980s. To understand the cultural setting in which Basquiat made his work, it is important to understand this context and how forms, movements, and scenes changed as the art world readjusted. Subcultural scenes, which were once seen as different from the mainstream art market, changed when critics and the public embraced and celebrated their artists.

Some critics say that Basquiat's quick rise to fame and just as quick, sad death from a drug overdose show how commercial and hyped up the international art scene was in the mid-1980s. For many people, this time period was a culture event that went against the artificial bubble economy of the time, hurting both the artists themselves and the quality of the art they made.

As an artist, Basquiat

In just a few short years, Jean-Michel Basquiat went from being a graffiti artist to a downtown rock sceneter to a well-known art star. He went from sleeping on the streets of New York City to becoming friends with Andy Warhol and becoming one of the most famous painters of the Neo-Expressionism art movement. This was a very steep rise. Basquiat died of a drug overdose when he was only 27, but he is now forever linked to the rise of interest in New York's downtown artists in the 1980s.

His work explored his mixed African, Latinx, and American background through a visual vocabulary of signs, symbols, and figures that spoke to him. As he moved from the street to the gallery, his art grew quickly in size, scope, and ambition. Much of his work was about the difference between wealth and poverty, and it showed his unique place as a person of color from the working class in the world of celebrity art. Since he died, people have paid more attention to and paid more money for his work. In 2017, one of his paintings set a new record for the most money ever paid at sale for an American artist's work.
