A little bit about Georgia O’Keeffe

Georgia O'Keeffe was a key figure in the rise of American modernism and its connection to European avant-garde groups at the turn of the 20th century. She made a lot of work over the course of seven decades, and she tried to capture the feeling and power of things by simplifying the natural world. Alfred Stieglitz called her the first female American modernist. Her paintings of flowers, barren landscapes, and close-up still lifes have become part of the legend and iconography of American art.

What did Georgia O'Keeffe did?

O'Keeffe used techniques from other artists and was especially inspired by Paul Strand's use of cropping in his photographs. She was one of the first artists to use this technique in painting by showing close-ups of uniquely American objects that were both detailed and abstract.

O'Keeffe didn't follow a particular art style, but like Arthur Dove, she tried abstracting nature-inspired patterns. She did a lot of work in a series, mixing abstraction and reality to make works that focused on the basic shapes of nature. Some of these pieces are very detailed, but in others, she took away what she thought wasn't important so she could focus on shape and color.

O'Keeffe's art stayed grounded in realism even as it pushed at its limits. She did this by paying close attention to nature, experimenting with scale, and using line and color in subtle ways. From the 1940s to the 1960s, O'Keeffe's art stood out because she was one of the few artists who stuck to representation at a time when most artists were trying out non-representational art or had stopped painting altogether.
